RESPONSE TO A VIDEO PORTRAYING TREE CUTING AND DEVASTATION IN THE KOME AREA OF ANLO

Image
In the second week of November 2021, a video went viral giving the impression that the people of Alakple and Atito in the Kome area of Anlo have been destroying trees planted by government in our area. This video is coming at a time that the world is focused on climate change at the COP26 in Glasgow UK and where tree planting and forestation are key issues of the conference.  It is important to note that tree planting in the Kome area of Anlo started in about the year 2000, as a self help project and not by Government. This project was spearheaded by the NGO called RUSO formed by the former Member of Parliament Hon. Clement Kofi Humado and family at Alakple. A Cassia seedling nursery was established in his residence at Alakple and managed by a Peace Corps volunteer called Pamela. Volunteer youth from Alakple and Latame were recruited to plant seedlings in the Kome towns and along the main road from Alakple to Kome Junction. Later individuals came from surrounding communities of Kodzi

THE BREWING TENSION IN ANLO CHIEFTAINCY CIRCLE

Image
The Chieftaincy institution is one of the oldest institutions which has survived the test of time, despite slight changes in its form and scope, the core mandate of chiefs remains absolute; to forster unity, promote peace, initiate developmental projects and sustain cultural and traditional values.  But the case is seemingly different in Anlo. It is beginning to emerge that, things are really falling apart in Anlo chieftaincy circle. This stems from the recent development in Anlo where all of a sudden public announcement and subsequent enstoolment of a new chief of Whuti, who is yet to be officially gazetted and his name be put on the National Register of Chiefs, on his own or stool owners, knowingly or unknowingly arrogated a title and jurisdiction to their stool with little or without any wider consultation with Awomefia, Torgbi Sri III and other divisional area chiefs. This sudden development got many citizens of Anlo alarmed, and many started asking questions as to how Kome and Shi

DEWENU-DEWEGODO, THE UNTOLD PLIGHT OF TWIN - VILLAGES

Image
The residents of the Dewenu and Dewegodo communities in the Anloga District of the Volta Region have raised serious concerns about the dangerous state of a 56.4 metre long decrepit wooden foot bridge constructed on River Dewe some years ago. The wooden foot bridge which was constructed by the then Keta Municipal Assembly to aid the free movement of people and goods across River Dewe has now become a deathtrap posing commuters, mostly school children and the aged who use it on a daily basis to a looming danger. The woodworks of the foot bridge has gradually worn-out, leaving a wide gaps in the structure. This foot bridge links the Dewenu and Dewegodo communities whose social and economic activities are intertwined. School children risk their lives daily by treking on the dilapidated foot bridge to have access to basic education, which is their right, at Dewenu. Heavily-pregnant women, the aged, the sick and the physically challenged are the most vulnerable as they find it extremely di

BAD ROADS, THE BLIGHT OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT.

Image
Road networks, just as any other catalyst infrastructure, opens up rural communities to development. Most rural communities in Ghana, particularly, the Volta Region, are under-developed due to bad nature of roads linking these communities to bigger towns despite being abound with a lot business potentials. Potholes ridden roads are not just recipe for road accidents but the straw that stirs the drink of poverty as profitable ventures remain untapped. The case is not different in  some rural communities in the Anloga District of Volta Region of Ghana. One road of importance in the Anloga District which is left to deteriorate is the 13 kilometres Savietula-Anyanui road. This particular road links notable communities such as Savietula, Atorkor, Akplorwotorkor, Adakordzi, Dzita, Agbledomi, Anyanui, Atiteti, Fuveme, Tunu, Bomigo and Gblife. The inhabitants of these communities are predominantly vegetable farmers and fisher folks who use this road on daily basis to transport their produce to

SCHOOL FEEDING IN LIMBO AS MATRON STARVE STUDENTS.

Image
Governments all over the world initiate policies and programs with the backdrop of alleviating poverty and hunger in rural areas. The Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) which started in 2005 is one of such policies. The school meals and school feeding have been used as an effective mechanism for addressing child nutrition, educational enrolment and retention and hygiene issues in most parts of the world. The prima goal of the Ghana School Feeding Programme is to deliver a well-organized, decentralized intervention providing disadvantaged school children with nutritionally adequate, locally produced food thereby reducing poverty through improved household incomes and effective local economic development. But the above mentioned goals of the policy seem to be hitting the rocks in the Anloga District. Miss Linda Degorl, a cousin to the DCE for Anloga District, is one of the privileged people to be awarded the school feeding program in some selected schools in Kome, in the Anloga Distr
